DGS November Tech SIG is Thursday, Nov 3

Technology SIG

The November meeting of the Dallas Genealogical Society’s Technology Interest Group will be held this Thursday, November 3 at 6pm on the 5th floor of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, 1515 Young Street, Dallas, 75201.

Program: “Digital image processing and file management”.  Speaker: Bruce Moore.

When working with large numbers of photos, traditional file system level folders and file names can quickly become unwieldy. Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Digikam, and Apple Photo are a few of the photo library management tools that make it easy to tag images with keywords, add descriptions and captions, and automatically recognize faces in large numbers of images. This 90-minute session will provide an overview of Adobe Lightroom and how to use it for three image workflow cases:

  • Scanning a set of images and identifying people in each image
  • Correcting exposure, contrast and other problems on a group of images from a single roll of film
  • Publishing a set of images to Flickr, Facebook and a website

For those of you who cannot join us in person you can still be part of the evening by joining the conversation using our GoTo Meeting account (note that we are limited to 25 users). Please join the meeting from your computer, tablet or smartphone. https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/270215877. The access code is 270-215-877.

DGS Tech SIG Meets This Thursday, Sept 1

Technology SIG

The September meeting of the Dallas Genealogical Society’s Technology interest group will be held this Thursday, Sept 1, from 6 to 8pm on the 5th floor of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, 1515 Young Street, Dallas TX, 75201.

The presentation is “Paying it forward: public indexing projects.” All genealogists rely on indexes – at the back of a book, as a printed index for a record set or for an on-line database. These accessible indexes don’t come with the record group. And they don’t appear like magic. They must be created and maintained by organizations and individuals. Thousands of volunteers work on indexing projects every year as more and more records are made available on-line or in printed books. Are you one of those volunteers?

Join SIG leader Suzan Younger (technologysig@dallasgenealogy.org) as the group identifies various indexing projects and takes an in-depth look at two or three projects that need your help. Did you know that our Dallas Genealogical Society is looking for volunteers to help index Dallas County probate records?

The meeting is free and open to the public.

If you can’t attend in person, please join us from home via GotoMeeting: https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/270215877.
